St. Lawrence University

Appleton Arena
Canton, NY

Tickets

  • Tickets cost $11 for reserved seats or $7 for general admission, and $5 for seniors, students and children. They are available online or via the SLU box office (315-229-5696). SLU's online system is a nice one that allows the buyer to choose their exact seats.
  • Since SLU students and faculty are given free admission, the arena gets pretty full and it is advisable to buy tickets ahead of time.
  • The visitors section is section D, a side section partly behind the goal line. Rows G and H are the highest and have the best view, and the lowest seat numbers are farthest from the goal line.

Directions

  • If using a GPS, the address of Appleton Arena is Miner Street, Canton, NY. You may need to enter it as the intersection of Miner and Maple Streets, which will get you to within a block of the arena.
  • From Troy: Take I-87 North to Exit 23 in Warrensburg. Go left off the exit ramp and then right at the traffic light and follow the signs for NY-28. Take NY-28 North into Indian Lake, where you pick up NY-30. Follow NY-30 to Tupper Lake, then take NY-3 West. After about 18 miles, take a right onto NY-56 North and follow it into Colton, then take NY-68. After about 3.5 miles there is a fork in the road and NY-68 goes to the right. Bear left onto Pierrepont-Canton Road, which eventually becomes Brick Chapel Road and intersects with Canton-Russell Road. Continue north on Canton-Russell Road. After crossing the bridge St. Lawrence University appears ahead. Take a left onto Maple Street. At the end of Maple, turn left onto Miner Street. Appleton Arena appears shortly on your left. Distance: 210 miles
  • From Potsdam (Clarkson): Take US-11 South to Canton. When you reach the center of town, take a left onto Park Street (it's an intersection with traffic lights). Take the second right which is Maple Street. At the end of Maple, turn left onto Miner Street. Appleton Arena appears shortly on your left. Distance: 10 miles.

Arena

  • Campus maps: Appleton Arena is on the lower left.
  • Parking: Large free parking lots are located just past the arena on both sides of the road. The lot across the street is unpaved and gets very messy in wet or snowy weather.
  • Seating: Appleton Arena seats 3,200. It gets fairly full, but it's usually possible to move to somewhat better seats.
  • Food: Concessions are located off the main walkway on the north side of the building — you'll pass them on the way to your visitors section seats. A good variety is offered including burgers, hot dogs, fries and pizza.

Hotels

  • See http://northcountrynow.com/motels.
  • The best hotels in the area are the Best Western University Inn in Canton and the Clarkson Inn and Hampton Inn in Potsdam. There is also the University Suites Hotel (formerly Comfort Suites) in Canton. Of these, the Hampton Inn is the newest and our recommendation for lodging even though it's in Potsdam and therefore a 15-20 minute drive from St. Lawrence. The Clarkson Inn is also very nice, but pricier and a bit more upscale and quiet. The Best Western and University Suites Hotel are in Canton and therefore closer to St. Lawrence. The Hampton Inn and University Suites Inn offer a free buffet breakfast. The Best Western does not but has a restaurant and bar on the premises.
