Union College

Messa Rink
Schenectady, NY

Tickets

  • Tickets are available online or by calling 518-388-6020. Tickets for RPI, Cornell and Clarkson games cost $15; all other games cost $10.
  • Diagram of Messa Rink: The visitors sections are 7 and 8. Messa Rink will fill up for some games, including RPI games, so it may not be possible to change your seat.

Directions

  • GPS Address: Messa Rink is on an internal road on Union's campus and doesn't have a street address. If you enter 1248 Lenox Avenue, Schenectady, into your GPS, you will arrive at approximately the entrance that leads to the rink.
  • From Troy: Take NY-7 West. When the road forks (shortly after you pass Bellevue Hospital on the left), bear right to get on Union Street. Go approximately two miles and take a right onto Wendell Avenue (the next right after Brierwood). Take the first left off Wendell on to Union Avenue (not the same as Union Street). When Union Avenue forks in about two blocks, bear right onto Lenox Road. The campus entrance closest to Messa Rink is about two blocks down Lenox Road on the left. Distance: 20 miles.

Arena

  • Campus map: Messa Rink is number 71, center and near the top.
  • Parking: There is a small parking lot off Lenox Road, but parking is rarely available there. Most people park along Lenox or, if there are no spots there, continue on to make a left on Nott Street and park along Avenue A or Avenue B, both on the right off Nott. Note that you will have a long walk through campus if you park in this area. Parking at Union is generally difficult; we therefore recommend you arrive early.
  • Seating: Messa Rink seats 2,300, but not comfortably. Seats are bleacher-style without backs and each designated space is about 18" wide. There is very little leg room and no room to put anything under the seats. For RPI games the arena will be sold out, which means you will get to know your neighbors extremely well. Note that it's a very small step down from the steps to each row of seats — people frequently trip at this point. The rink is usually quite warm, especially when crowded.
  • Food: Concessions are located behind the stands on the side of the rink opposite the main entrance. Hot dogs, pizza and snacks are available at two stands — lines can get long but move quickly.

Hotels

  • See http://www.union.edu/admissions/visit/area/accommodations/.
  • If you're coming to the area just for the Union game, the Hampton Inn in Schenectady is a good choice. If you're attending a game at RPI too, the hotels listed on this page under "Albany and Surrounding Area" will put you closer to restaurants and shopping. The hotels in Latham in particular are about halfway between Union and RPI and therefore convenient to both.

Other things to do

  • Union has a great website for visitors with all kinds of information about entertainment and attractions.
  • Shopping: Crossgates Mall and Colonie Center are the two biggest malls in the Capital District area. Colonie Center has the area's only Nordstrom Rack, L.L.Bean and Whole Foods, and is located on Wolf Road in Colonie, a busy area with many more restaurants and stores.
  • Movies: Regal Cinemas has 18 screens including IMAX at Crossgates Mall and another 13 including RPX at Colonie Center.
